Eddie Murphy is back, and this time he’s brought his daughter, Bella, along for the ride.
The American comedy legend’s newest film, the sequel to his classic blockbuster, Coming to America, is set to premier March 5 on Amazon Prime Video where fans will find out whatever became of the romance between their favourite prince of Zamunda and the heiress to the McDowell’s restaurant empire.
In Coming 2 America, Murphy’s Prince Akeem Joffer is on the verge of ascending to the throne when he learns he has a son back in the United States who his father, King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), wants groomed as the new heir.
In honouring his father’s dying wish and heading back ‘2’ America with his loyal best friend and aide, Semmi (Arsenio Hall), King Akeem is bound to get some blowback from his wife Queen Lisa and daughter Princess Meeka

While Bella Murphy’s role has not been revealed, she won’t be playing Meeka, who will instead be brought to life by the beautiful Kiki Layne of If Beale Street Could Talk and Netflix’s The Old Guard. Shari Headley returns to play Lisa, as well as John Amos as Akeem’s father-in-law and former employer, Cleo McDowell.
It’s not clear how the absence of Akeem’s mother, who was played by late Jamaican actress Madge Sinclair in the original film, will be explained.
Expect some hijinks in both Zamunda and America with Wesley Snipes joining the cast as General Izzi and the old New York barber shop gang played to hilarious effect by Murphy and Hall.
Coming 2 America is directed by Craig Brewer, who takes the reins from director of the 1988 original, John Landis. Brewer previously worked with Murphy and Snipes on the critically acclaimed 2019 Netflix original Dolemite is My Name.

Among the contributors to the screenplay, based on characters created by Murphy, is Kenya Barris, the creator of Blackish.
“Coming to America is one of my films that has really worked its way into the culture,” Murphy has said.
“The one thing that I didn’t want to do was a bad sequel to a movie that a lot of people invested in.”

“The legacy of Coming to America is that it is unique, it’s rare. Black people, we don’t get a lot of movies like this one. Coming to America is a romantic fantasy comedy. Usually, when we see ourselves on the screen, it’s heavy things… . Rarely do we get just to go see some escapism. Just to go see a movie and not have to think about any of that stuff.”
