The Jamaica Meteorological Service is today (July 1) advising that the island will experience heavy showers this weekend from a strong tropical wave, which is currently moving across the Eastern Caribbean.

The Met Service, in a 5:00 am advisory, reports that the tropical wave is expected to move across Jamaica on Friday ahead of a now-weakening high-pressure ridge and still-dominant low-level jet stream.

Satellite imagery indicates that the tropical wave, after affecting sections of the Eastern Caribbean, particularly Barbados, continues to produce a large area of showers and thunderstorms.

The agency is forecasting partly cloudy conditions across northeastern parishes, while it should be mainly sunny elsewhere. Isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms are in store for western parishes, partly cloudy across hilly areas. Strong, gusty winds are also expected along Jamaica’s south coast.

Maximum temperatures anticipated in major cities Kingston and Montego Bay are 33 degrees Celcius respectively.

Additionally, the Met Office is reminding fisherfolk and other marine interests that a small craft warning remains in effect for inshore and offshore areas of the south coast due to strong winds and rough seas.

In its three-day outlook, the Met Office said conditions are again expected to worsen as the outer bands of Tropical Storm Elsa begin affecting sections of Jamaica.

While projections indicate Elsa poses no direct threat to Jamaica just yet, the tropical storm’s impact could be felt as early as late Saturday with night-time showers drenching eastern parishes.

Weekend forecast:

Friday: Morning showers and isolated thunderstorms across eastern parishes. Cloudy afternoon to evening with showers and isolated thunderstorms across sections of most parishes. Windy.
Saturday: Becoming partly cloudy afternoon and windy. Night-time showers across eastern parishes.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy with early morning showers across eastern parishes. Widespread showers and thunderstorms with occasional gusty winds across the island late morning and throughout the rest of the day.
