It was just another occasion to hail the king!

The recently held Sagicor Corporate Awards honoured ‘insurance royalty’ Chris Lawe with the prestigious number one broker award.

Celebrating top performance in the individual line division, the accolade is a coveted prize for one of Sagicor’s key business segments that focuses on life insurance, personal investment plans, health and critical illness coverage, and other financial solutions for individuals and groups.

For Chris, this moment wasn’t just about professional recognition, it was about a powerful comeback, the reclaiming of his legacy, and a heartfelt thank-you to the people who stood beside him.

Lawe is no stranger to success. He was once the reigning top manager at Sagicor, one of the Caribbean’s largest insurance providers. But after years at the top, he made the bold decision to leave and join Fraser Fontaine & Kong Limited Insurance Brokers (FFK) as vice president of Individual Life Insurance. He leads Spartan Sales Force, the name of the individual life insurance department at FFK, stepping into the brokerage world with a vision to serve clients even better.

“I left Sagicor after a strong winning streak, and honestly, everything got quiet,” he shared. “It was right after COVID-19, and both business and personal life took a hit.” Following a divorce, a quiet season both on and off the social scene, and stepping away from a powerhouse brand like Sagicor, Chris had to rebuild emotionally and professionally.

“To re-establish my GOAT status, it means a lot. I disappeared from the scene, and within a year, I was able to accomplish all this. It’s all based on my advisors and the clients. My passion to serve them drives my performance. To achieve this now, with FFK, and in such a short time, feels like a real breakthrough. It shows we’re back. Bigger, badder, and stronger.”

Chris’ approach to sales and client service is rooted in what he calls a “client-centric operation.”

“One of our focuses is ethical and performance-based energy. We perform through the service to our clients. We’re about listening, creating solutions, and truly helping people. You can’t help if you don’t know what the real need is.”

The most challenging part of the job is handling varied personalities and emotions from a people management standpoint. He always wants so much for people. But the biggest joy he gets is from creating wealth for the clients and his advisors, providing financial security, and seeing his advisors succeed. When they win, he wins.

Chris’s success story is grounded in deep family values. Raised in a Christian household as one of five brothers in a large family, his upbringing instilled discipline, community, and ambition. He was active in church and athletics and learned early about the importance of service.

The tragic loss of his mother five days before his 19th birthday left a lasting impact. “It affected me in different ways,” he shared. Yet those early life experiences shaped a man who is both empathetic and driven, a leader who balances grit with grace.

Outside of the office, Chris is a man of many talents and passions. He’s a trained pilot, a boat captain, and a dedicated father of two sons, who he describes as his heartbeat. He’s very active in their lives, cherishing quality time and staying grounded through family.

He’s also an exceptional cook and author of ‘Organic Success: A Paved Path to Record-Breaking Success’.

“I can cook, wash, and clean! My favourite meal is oxtail or stew pork with a fried chicken thigh, plenty of gravy on the rice, and a side of raw vegetables. I love barbecuing and anything on the grill.”

He finds peace at sea and joy in travel. His partner, attorney and fitness instructor, Liane Chung, plays a pivotal role in his support system and has been instrumental in his re-energised confidence and comeback.

Chris credits Michael Lawe as a key mentor and influence in his life. When asked about what first inspired him to join the industry, he says it was the unlimited income potential, flexibility, and the opportunity to help others.

Balancing pressure, targets, clients, family, personal life and team leadership is not easy. Chris admits. “I don’t balance them—I get them done.”

His client philosophy is to listen first.

“You can’t help people if you don’t know what you’re helping with.”

One of his most impactful experiences came early in his career when a close childhood friend developed breast cancer in her twenties. Thanks to the policies he had provided her, she was able to receive treatment, maintain her financial independence, and reclaim her confidence as a woman. That story continues to inspire the way he trains his team and serves his clients.

“There is no one who has gone through my training and has not heard that story.”

Chris believes the biggest misconception about insurance is that you don’t need “dead leff money.” It is a total investment in one’s future and can supplement that of their future generations.

“People don’t see how life-changing and generationally impactful insurance can be. If I could change one thing, it would be the level of

appreciation for the life-changing and generational wealth that insurance can provide for our country.”

Chris is already looking ahead. He intends for his team to be the biggest brokerage in Jamaica, spreading our wings across the country, delivering unmatched service, and being known for that.

His advice for aspiring brokers is to become a student of the business and serve the people. Success comes through service. And read the book- Organic Success: A Paved Path to Record-Breaking Success’.

As Chris Lawe proudly flies the Spartan flag and builds the next chapter of his legacy, one thing is clear: excellence may have taken a brief pause, but it never left. It just came back louder, stronger, and more determined than ever.
