Miqueal-Symone Williams, Jamaica’s 2021 delegate in the Miss Universe pageant, just missed out on becoming the fourth woman since Yendi Phillips’ 2010 campaign to make a top-five entry on Sunday (May 16).

The grand coronation show, in its 69th year, sees the Williams sitting out the nerve-racking question and answer session live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Miqueal-Symone, the only black contestant remaining in the competition at this point, was edged out by Peru, Mexico, India, Brazil and Dominican Republic.

Jamaicans on Twitter were collectively shocked as they felt Williams was a shoe-in for the top five.

Many, however, brushed off their initial dismay to congratulate the 24-year-old model for representing Jamaica well, adding that she made the country proud.

Among those showering Miqueal-Symone with praise was fourth-runner up Kaci Fennell, who competed in the 2014 pageant.

“Flawless representation @symone_w, the world is your oyster, my dear! Don’t let this dim that bright light of yours,” Fennell tweeted.

*NB: The Sunday publication of this article erroneously stated that Miqueal-Symone Williams just missed out on becoming the second Jamaican Miss Universe contestant to make the top five since Yendi Phillips in 2010. The feat was repeated by Davina Bennett (2017) and Kaci Fennell (2014).
