Emmy award-winning, American actor and singer Sheryl Lee Ralph received her third honourary doctorate, this time from her son’s alma mater, Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Her son Etienne Maurice previously graduated from the university in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in film and video.
The university honoured Ralph with an honourary Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa degree, from Drexel. This degree is generally awarded for significant contributions to society.

In her commencement speech, Ralph said: “As you, the Class of 2024, embark on life after college, let me say this yet again: People don’t have to like you, people don’t have to love you, but when you look in the mirror, you better love what you see!”
The actress was awarded in 2008 with an honourary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Tougaloo College. Later, she was given an honourary Doctor of Fine Arts degree by her alma mater, Rutgers University.
She made history becoming the youngest person to graduate from the university at just 19 years old.
After Drexel’s graduation posted their photos and announcements on their website, Ralph took to her X account on June 18, writing: “Nine years ago I proudly celebrated my son as he graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Film and Video from Drexel University, today I am deeply honoured to receive my honorary degree from Drexel, now there are two Drexel Dragons in the family!”
