Constant Spring Tax Office expected to remain closed Tuesday, damaged files also stored electronically

As investigations continue into a fire at the Constant Spring Tax Office in St Andrew, Jamaica today (June 7), the facility is expected to remain closed tomorrow and customers have been asked in the meantime to visit another facility or utilise Tax Administration Jamaica’s (TAJ) online services instead.

The TAJ said all staff and clients have been safely evacuated after the fire was detected in a section of the compound.

The fire which is reported to have started in the registry department, was brought under control by responding units from the Half-Way Tree Fire Station which arrived at the scene some time after 8 a.m. 

Patrick Arscott, assistant superintendent for the Jamaica Fire Brigade, indicated that files in the department were damaged during in the incident.

At the same time, Meris Haughton, chief corporate communications officer at TAJ, has sought to assure the public that, while an assessment is yet to be done on the level of damage to documents, files are also stored electronically.
