Freshly minted 100m golden girl at the World Athletics Under-20 Championship, Alana Reid, told Our Today that she was happy to deliver on Jamaica’s demands for a gold medal.

“I am thrilled to know that in my final year of qualifying as a Junior I was able to cop the gold, not only from an individual event but for my country,” she explained.

“Jamaicans were calling for the reign to reside with us and it was delivered,” she continued.

On Wednesday, Reid, Jamaica’s National Junior Record holder with 10.92 seconds, stopped the clock at 11.17 seconds to secure Jamaica’s only gold medal at the championship in Lima, Peru on day 3 of the event.

Reid is the fifth Jamaican to win the blue-ribbon event at the Under-20 level following triumphs by Nicole Mitchell (1992), Veronica Campbell-Brown (2000), Briana Williams (2018) and Tina Clayton (2021 and 2022).

Reid is the daughter of Reggae Boy Garfield Reid. He was also involved in track before branching off into football.

“My focus,” Reid said, “is now shifted to tomorrow’s event where I participate in the 4x100m relays to help gain another victory for the country.”

Meanwhile, as Jamaica continued to bask in the glory of yet another global victory, Karen Chisholm, the ever-present mother of Alana Reid, described her feeling as delayed gratification but mission accomplished.

“We established goals last October for this season. One was to make the Olympic team, and compete and secure the World Under-20 100m title,” Chisholm revealed.

“The delayed reason being that Alana told me from age 8 that she wanted to become an Olympian, and she stuck to that long-term goal. So, to see it blossom 11 years after it’s an amazing feeling. Mission accomplished.”
