The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information has announced the closure of all schools for in-person classes on Tuesday due to expected adverse weather conditions.
The directive from the ministry follows consultations with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the Meteorological Service of Jamaica.
This measure is taken in the interest of the safety of students, teachers, and school staff.
Schools are encouraged to implement online learning modalities where possible to ensure continuity in students’ education. Furthermore, school administrations are asked to promptly communicate with parents and students about the arrangements for virtual classes and any necessary support for remote learning.
“The safety of our students and educators is paramount. We are urging all schools to make use of online platforms where feasible so that learning can continue even as we prioritise safety. The safety of all stakeholders is our priority. We thank all parents, students, and educators for their understanding and cooperation during this time,” said Education Minister Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon.
Schools are encouraged to assign tasks to students without access to the internet or a computer/tablet in line with their workbooks/textbooks as per their timetable to minimise disruptions in their development.
The Government will monitor weather conditions closely and provide further updates as necessary. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay informed through official announcements and to take all necessary precautions for their families.
