What began as a fun experiment at the Australian Open turned into a life-changing moment for amateur Jordan Smith.

The New South Wales state champion walked onto Rod Laver Arena hoping to snatch a single point and walked away with A$1 million, a new level of fame, and bragging rights over world number two Jannik Sinner after winning the ‘Million Dollar One Point Slam’.

The crowd of nearly 15,000 watched in disbelief as Smith thrived under the spotlight, also taking down women’s world number four Amanda Anisimova in the one-point shootout format. The event provided amateur players with a rare opportunity to test themselves against elite professionals, with every match decided by a single, high-pressure rally.

The finale delivered more drama when Smith faced Taiwan’s Joanna Garland, ranked 117 in the world. Garland had already shaken the arena by beating men’s world number three Alexander Zverev and former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios earlier in the event, setting up a thrilling closing clash.

Smith was not the only amateur to make waves. Queensland state champion Alec Reverente also had his moment, defeating men’s world number seven Felix Auger-Aliassime. As the two standout amateurs, Smith and Reverente later squared off for an extra prize, a new car, with Reverente taking the keys.

The one-point slam proved that sometimes all it takes is a single rally to change everything.
