Jamaica’s ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks, is among the hundreds of diplomats attending the inauguration of Joseph Biden, who becomes the 46th American president today (January 20).
Marks, in a short post on her official Facebook page, pledged to “represent” for the historic occasion, after arriving at the US Capitol building donning a face mask designed with the Jamaican flag.
It is a chilly two degrees Celsius in Washington DC, according to Marks, who, under immense security presence from the US National Guard, said she would still keep an eye out for “crazies” associated with outgoing president Donald Trump and right-wing militias.
“Dear friends, attending today’s United States 59th Inaugural Ceremony was a challenging decision amidst 37-degree [Fahrenheit] weather, the COVID-19 surge, and uncertainty about what the crazies might do today,” she wrote.

Despite the anxiety, Marks said she felt a great surge of pride in the ceremony, which also sees Kamala Harris, whose father is Jamaican, sworn in as the first black and female vice-president in US history.
“But, this is such a historic occasion—a member of our diaspora will become the first female VP of the United States! So I have on my thermal suit to combat the cold, my KN95 double mask and well… for the crazies, let’s pray. #represent,” she added.
