The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ), in partnership with Food for the Poor, JetBlue, Dennis Shipping, ARC Manufacturing and Colgate-Palmolive, distributed care packages to more than 700 families affected by Hurricane Melissa this week.
The relief distribution, which took place at Grange Hill High School, provided essential food and hygiene items to residents across the parish. Each care package included canned beans, mackerel, vegetables, cornmeal, rice, toilet paper, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, along with bottled water to meet immediate needs. Teams also went into surrounding communities, including Church Lincoln, Race Course, and Belleigh Road, to deliver packages directly to elderly and shut-in residents who were unable to travel to the distribution site.
“This outreach is part of AFJ’s ongoing Hurricane Melissa Disaster Relief efforts,” said Caron Chung, executive director of the AFJ. “We are deeply grateful to our partners and donors whose generosity makes it possible to reach families and communities in need across Jamaica.”
The Grange Hill event forms part of a broader AFJ disaster relief plan to provide targeted support to communities that have been marooned or severely affected by the hurricane.
