Andre Russell took five wickets in 12 balls but his Kolkata Knight Riders went down by 10 runs to defending champions Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League clash Tuesday (April 13) in Chennai.
Russell finished with figures of 5-15 as Mumbai plunged from 86 for 1 to 152 all out from their 20 overs. The defending champions lost their last nine wickets for just 66 runs.
Captain Rohit Sharma’s 43 from 32 balls that included three fours and a six before he was bowled by Pat Cummins, and Suryakumar Yadav, who hit seven fours and two sixes on his way to 56, were the only two scores of note in the innings.
It was the loss of Yadav’s wicket to Shakib al Hasan in the 11th over that triggered the collapse.
Pat Cummins got Ishan Kishan out for one and star batsman Hardik Pandya was caught by Russell off the bowling of Prasdih Krisha for 15, before the Jamaican all-rounder got into the act with the ball.
Russell’s use of the around-the-wicket angle to go full and wide resulted in the dismissals of Kieron Pollard (5) and Marco Jansen (0) in the same over. He would take three more in his next over – the last of the innings – to finish with 5 for 15, his IPL best.
Needing just 153 to win, KKR could only manage 142 for 7.
Openers Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill, who scored 57 and 33, respectively, laid the foundation with an opening stand of 72.
But Rahul Chahar would take the next four wickets as KKR fell away, losing seven wickets for 70 runs from 11.1 overs, falling 10 runs shy of their target. Russell could only muster nine runs from the 15 balls faced.
Trent Boult took two wickets, including Russell’s in the final over for figures of 2-27.
Chahar was named Player of the Match for his match-winning figures of 4-27 that turned the game on its head.
