Android, the world’s largest operating system with over 3 billion devices worldwide, unveiled on Tuesday, September 5, a revamped logo and a 3D makeover for its iconic robot mascot.

Jason Fournier, the director of Android consumer brand management, in a release on Google’s blog site, shared the importance of aligning the brand with Android’s core values of openness and inclusivity. He said, “As we’ve grown, so has our vision. We believe our brand system should reflect Android’s essence of being open, iterative, and inclusive.”

Over the past decade, Android has undergone several branding updates. In 2019, they introduced a more user-friendly logo and simplified the naming convention for Android releases, making it easier to understand globally.

Old Android design

This latest refresh draws inspiration from Google’s Material design palette, aiming to establish a seamless connection between Android and Google. Perhaps the most noticeable change is the transformation of the beloved Android robot, known as the bugdroid. This iconic character now boasts a more dynamic 3D appearance, giving it extra character and dimension. The bugdroid’s full-body design has also been updated to facilitate its adaptability across digital and real-world environments.

Android users can expect to see the new branding elements, including the updated logo and 3D bugdroid, appearing on Android devices and various platforms throughout the year.
