Member of Parliament for East Portland, Ann-Marie Vaz has pledged to donate the first year increase of her salary increase for parliamentarians to assist vendors impacted by the fire at Musgrave Market in Port Antonio yesterday (May 28).
In a statement on Sunday, Minister Vaz said: “We give God thanks that no life was lost in the tragic fire which started in the historic Musgrave Market and affected other nearby businesses in Port Antonio, Portland on Sunday. The fire caused significant damage to the market and nearby businesses.”
She noted that she is currently in dialogue with the government and various private sector stakeholders to seek funding to assist as many people impacted by the fire to ‘get back up and running in the shortest possible time.’
The fire is said to have started in the Musgrave Market around 8:00 am and destroyed stalls before spreading to neighbouring business establishments such as Kamal’s supermarket and Portland Jewelers.
