Antiguan Education Minister arrested and charged

Hours are being relieved of his duties, Antiguan Education Minister Michael Browne was arrested and charged Thursday morning (November 26) based on allegations made against him by a woman.

While the nature of the allegations was not stated, Information Minister Melford Nicholas, in a terse address to the nation, said that Browne professed his innocence and asked for support from his Cabinet colleagues.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne wrote to Governor-General Rodney Williams to relieve Browne of his ministerial portfolio after being notified by the Police High Command.

The All Saint’s West Member of Parliament has been in the Gaston Browne administration for the last five years.

Daryl Matthew was sworn in as new Education Minister in the capital St John’s.
