Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has received a unique tribute after his memorable World Cup displays inspired a newly discovered species of sea slug to be named in his honour.
The small red mollusc, discovered by Caribbean biologist Jesus Ortea, has been named Aldisa vozinha in recognition of the 40-year-old goalkeeper’s role in Cape Verde’s historic World Cup journey.
Cape Verde became the second smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament and captured global attention after earning their first World Cup point in a goalless draw against European champions Spain. They later pushed defending champions Argentina all the way before suffering a 3-2 extra time defeat in the last 32.
Ortea explained that the red colour of the species served as a fitting connection to Vozinha’s performance against Spain, known as La Roja.
