The Reggae industry has lost one of its own, Fantan Mojah who passed away yesterday just three weeks before his 50th birthday.

The Rastafarian artiste, who was being treated at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston after suffering complications related to his heart, died after his health deteriorated rapidly in the days leading up to his death.

Further details surrounding his death were not immediately available.

However, prior to falling ill, Fantan Mojah, born Owen Moncrieffe, was preparing to perform at this year’s Reggae Jam Festival in Germany with sources reporting that a European visa for the engagement had recently been approved.

The father of at least five children had been experiencing serious health problems in recent years. In July 2024, he was hospitalised in Martinique after suffering breathing difficulties and tightness in his chest.

At the time, reports indicated that Fantan Mojah’s heart was functioning at approximately 15 per cent capacity. By early 2025, the singer appeared to be recovering. Media reports described his progress as encouraging, and he eventually resumed touring in Europe.

Known for his powerful delivery and spiritually charged reggae songs, Fantan Mojah built a devoted following through recordings that blended Rastafarian teachings, social commentary and emotional intensity. He was a simple window washer whose life story changed drastically when his talent was seen by Downsound Records boss Joe Bogdanovich.
