JMMB is encouraging clients to begin preparing for the gradual reduction and eventual elimination of cheque payments as Jamaica’s financial sector continues its transition toward safer, faster and more efficient electronic payment methods.

The initiative, led by the Bank of Jamaica and the Jamaica Bankers Association, forms part of a broader effort to modernise the country’s payments ecosystem and increase the use of digital payment solutions.

As part of the phased transition, effective September 1, 2026, JMMB will no longer issue or accept Jamaican dollar cheques valued at J$1 million and above. These cheques will not be processed through the national clearing system and may be returned to the depositor. Further reductions in cheque limits are expected in March 2027 and September 2027, with cheques anticipated to be fully phased out by March 2028.

“Jamaica’s transition away from cheques represents an important step in the continued modernisation of our financial system,” said Jerome Smalling, Chief Executive Officer, JMMB Bank. “Across the world, consumers and businesses are increasingly embracing digital payment methods because they offer greater convenience, speed and security. This shift presents an opportunity for Jamaica to strengthen its payments infrastructure while making everyday financial transactions more efficient for everyone.”

JMMB is encouraging clients to explore a range of electronic payment alternatives currently available through Moneyline, JMMB’s online transaction system, including Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) payments for larger-value transactions, Automated Clearing House (ACH) transfers within applicable limits, and Corporate Bulk Upload services for businesses managing supplier payments, invoices, bills and payroll transactions.

These solutions provide clients with enhanced security, reduced processing times and greater flexibility in managing their financial affairs, while supporting the country’s move toward a more digitally enabled economy.

Smalling emphasised that while many clients have already adopted electronic payment methods, JMMB remains committed to helping those who may require additional guidance during the transition. “At JMMB, our focus is on ensuring that no client is left behind. We understand that changing long-established payment habits can take time, and we are committed to providing the support, education and solutions our clients need to navigate this transition with confidence. Our team stands ready to assist individuals and businesses in identifying the payment options that best meet their needs.”

Clients who require assistance are encouraged to contact their JMMB representative, visit their nearest JMMB branch, or reach out to JMMB’s Client Care team for guidance on transitioning to electronic payment methods.
