Is April Fools’ Day still a thing?

During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the global day of pranks (April 1) was put off since folks could not find or laugh at any jokes while the world was going through a devastating pandemic.

Four years later, it seems that the highly anticipated day is now forgotten as fewer people participate in the hoax, pranks, jokes and good fun that is April Fools’ Day.

Already, people have been announcing on their social media that they will not be taking part in April Fools’ shenanigans. This growing trend of indifference has those who enjoy the lightheartedness and innocence of April Fools’ Day disappointed.

Folks are wondering if they should give up on the holiday that has been around for centuries, or try to revive the beloved day of pranks.

A growing emphasis on empathy and sensitivity seems to be the common denominator among those who no longer participate.

The pandemic, job loss, wars, inflation, climate change, a shift in societal attitudes as well as other global phenomena have broken the world’s funny bone and now, out of respect for those feeling the pressures the most, the rest of the world has pulled out of the day’s activities.

One could say April 1 is now the official ‘moment of silence’ for all the bad happening around the world. For the jokesters of the globe, the dying popularity of the day would be synonymous if Thanksgiving or Christmas were no longer celebrated. This was their one day to truly shine! They argue that the world needs laughter now more than ever, but I digress.

In light of these changes, the future of April Fools’ Day remains uncertain as society continues to evolve. Maybe the spirit of the day will come back next year. Who knows?
