In recognition of Engineers’ Week, Arel Limited embarked on a mission to promote an interest and a passion for engineering among students.
Throughout the week, under the theme, ‘Engineering: Preserving a Legacy, Embracing Sustainability and Driving Technology,’ members of Arel’s engineering team visited several schools, sharing insights into the world of engineering, describing what engineering entails, and the path to pursuing a successful career in this field.
The Arel team of mechanical and electrical engineers dedicated their time to engaging with students from both primary and secondary schools throughout the week. The schools the team visited included St. Andrew Technical High, Allman Town Primary, St. Andrew Primary, St. Patrick’s Primary and Maxfield Park Primary.
According to Delroy Lewis, head of the electrical department at Arel Limited, “Our mission is not only to maintain, but to elevate the standards of excellence in engineering, shaping a brighter future for our industry. By focusing on the concept of continuing improvement in the quality of service, operation, and training. Our team of engineers is committed to inspiring and empowering the next generation of talent to be a part of the engineering fraternity.”

Wayne Rattray, head of the department of Building Construction at St. Andrew Technical High School, in expressing his enthusiasm for the initiative, said, “This is a great opportunity for the students to see what is out there in the real world of engineering. It is very good to have the actual professionals come in and encourage them to continue to work hard and master the subjects they need to move into the field.”
The impact of Arel’s electrical and mechanical engineering team’s visits were palpable among the students, as evidenced by Damar Smart, a grade nine student at St. Andrew Technical High School, who remarked, “It’s cool to see young people in the field with so much knowledge who can influence and encourage us. They gave us advanced but real down-to-earth knowledge, especially about what it takes to get into engineering.”
Melanie Subratie, chairperson of Arel Limited, added, “Through sharing engaging presentations and firsthand experiences, I believe that the next generation of engineers were inspired with a deeper understanding of the possibilities within the field of engineering. At Arel, we are committed to driving innovation and progress, shaping the future of engineering in Jamaica, and contributing to Jamaica’s development and economic growth.”
