Arnett Gardens made a winning start to the defence of their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield title with a thumping 4-0 win over Dublanc FC of Dominica at the Ato Boden Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday.

Jamaica College’s 17-year-old striker Giovanni Taylor opened the floodgates in the ninth minute, then Shai Smith netted twice in the 12th and 16th minutes, and Chantomoi Taylor completed the emphatic win, netting late in the 90+2 minute.

Arnett Gardens are second in Group D on three points behind Club Franciscain of Martinique on goal difference, after they defeated Doc’s United of Anguilla 6-1.

AC Port of Spain of Trinidad and Tobago edged Scholars International FC of Cayman Islands 2-1 to be in third spot.

Giovanni Taylor, the son of former Reggae Boy Fabian Taylor, set Arnett Gardens on their way, controlling a pass over the tip on his chest and firing home before the other two scorers got in on the action.

Arnett Gardens’ head coach Phillip Williams was happy with the win.

“The chemistry still needs to be better, but it’s a work in progress. A good win to start the defence of our title and hope that this will set the stage for the other games,” said Williams, who took charge of the club recently. “It was a complete game by all departments today and a comprehensive win. Lots of positive moments and even though this is our first competitive game, we were fluid in possession of the ball and were organised defensively,” he added.

The competition continues on Monday, but Jamaica will next be in action on Tuesday in a crucial clash against AC Port of Spain.
