One month after Hurricane Melissa devastated Treasure Beach, local entrepreneur and philanthropist Aubyn Henry, through the Aubyn Foundation, partnered with Smurfs Café to bring a day of comfort, connection, and relief to hundreds of families still recovering.
Working alongside Dawn and her daughter Carlette Moxam, Chief Operating Officer of Smurfs Café, the team delivered an unforgettable experience: an all-you-can-eat, free community dinner featuring oxtail, stew peas, lobster pasta, curry goat, baked and fried chicken, creamed sweet potato, potato salad and more.
What started as a simple concept quickly grew into a powerful act of unity. More than 2,500 dinners were served, and the event blossomed into an afternoon filled with laughter, games, and joy, giving families a moment to breathe after weeks of stress and uncertainty.
Dawn Moxam, who originated the idea, shared her heart behind it.
“I had to do this. After seeing what Treasure Beach went through, I knew our café had to give back in a big way. When I called Aubyn, he said, ‘Let’s do it bigger.’ And that is exactly what happened,” she said.
Meanwhile, her daughter, Carlette Moxam, emphasised the importance of showing up for their community.
“This was not just about food. It was about giving people a day to feel cared for again. Seeing the smiles made every bit of effort worth it.”
Aubyn Henry, who played a major role in scaling, supporting, and executing the initiative, spoke on why he immediately got involved,” the younger Moxam said.
“When Dawn shared the idea, I knew right away this was something we needed. Treasure Beach is home, and home deserves the very best, especially after a storm like Melissa. My job was simple: show up, support, and help make the impact bigger,” Henry said.
He opted to host the dinner on that date to mark the birthday of his late grandfather, who passed away 18 years ago.
