Extreme wet weather conditions, such as those brought on by flood rains from the hurricane, can expose people to pathogens, leading to new or recurring infections. Flood waters are the primary carrier.

The contamination of buildings such as homes, shelters, schools, businesses and athletic facilities, among others, often results from stagnant water or rain-soaked areas such as ceilings, mattresses and pillows, drapery, upholstered furniture, carpets and rugs, clothing, stuffed toys and books.

It is important, at this time, to assess the impact of wet weather conditions on health as hospitals and related facilities are seeing an influx of patients. The question that needs to be asked is whether the symptoms or the illnesses are being triggered by the home, working or recreational settings. Could poor living conditions be at the heart of new, or recurring health conditions, especially those caused by contamination and infection?

Mould: The ill-health causing factor

Among the environmental impacts on health after the hurricane are the signs and symptoms of mold causing infections. Mould is a fungus that lives both outdoors and indoors. Its colour can range from white to green to black. Regardless of where it is identified, it presents health risks and should be removed as quickly as possible, particularly from spaces where patients are presenting with symptoms and illnesses. The presence of black mould calls for urgent attention because of its more profound impact on our health. So, it is important to ascertain whether the following are among the patient’s complaints:

  • Allergy-like conditions
  • Respiratory ailments
  • Neurological symptoms

The effects include headache, sneezing, sore throat, runny nose, watery eyes, dizziness, coughs, itching and skin rashes, sinusitis or the onset of asthmatic symptoms, fatigue and low energy.

The prolonged humid and damp conditions of a building and its contents could be either harmless or toxic, but can still trigger symptoms in individuals who may already have been affected by other allergens.

Mould prevention, control and remediation

The first measure is ventilation of the work or living spaces. Fix leaks or replace damaged structures which allow moisture to enter and become trapped in the space.

Once it is identified, contain the mould-affected area in preparation for cleaning and remediation. This is usually the work of professional mould experts. Contact the commercial cleaning industry for advice on cleaning and remediation.

Mould remediation starts with the identification of the type and extent of the growth problem. Mould requires moisture to grow, so experts will first identify any water damage or prolonged condensation in the building structure. The obvious key factors will be addressed, including dry wall, insulation and air conditioning ductwork, or any other possible situation conducive to mould growth. Mould is not only visible to the naked eye but can also be detected in the musty odour in clothes, furniture, carpets and documents.

The owners of the building structures can choose to address mould remediation on their ow,n as it may appear to be cost-effective, but must also bear in mind that professional intervention needs to be considered. The goal is to make informed decisions to ensure a safe and healthy work and living environment. Know when to call the expert.

Summary

“Understanding how mould occurs and develops, where it is likely to grow, and the health risks it poses underscores the importance of prompt and effective mould remediation after water damage. By taking immediate action, property owners can ensure a healthy living environment”. (Author, Bridgette Smith, ServiceMaster Restore)
