Belize prime minister struck with COVID-19

Prime Minister of Belize Dean Barrow has tested positive for COVID-19, four days before the country holds general elections to elect a new government.

The positive test has been confirmed in an official statement released to the local media. The official statement indicated that Prime Minister Barrow has gone in to self-quarantine pending further testing. The announcement comes as the tiny Caribbean territory reported two more deaths and 72 new cases of the virus over the past 24 hours.

The statement did not indicate whether the prime minister’s driver and other staff members have returned a positive testing for COVID-19, giving no further details on the issue. The 72 new cases recorded in Belize came from infections reported across several parts of the country including Orange Walk and Stann Creek.

The two reported deaths, both males came from a senior citizen in Orange Walk, while the second death occurred in San Ignacio. Official figures confirmed that Belize now has 3,977 positive COVID 19 cases with 1,588 being active and a total death count of 66.
