They may have saved democracy as we know it!

I almost always never like to use race, whether to score points or to strengthen an argument, and I mean almost never.

However, with all that has been happening since the United States presidential election and the continued attempt at brazenly, if not criminally, trying to subvert the democratic process by President Donald Trump and his band of merry men, I have to give a big shout out to black voters – specially black women voters.

Remember it wasn’t that long ago that candidate Joe Biden was on the ropes and was in danger of losing the Democratic nomination to the then frontrunner Bernie Sanders.

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden.

The Democratic primary in South Carolina was Biden’s last stand as a loss there would have all but handed the nomination to Sanders.

Republicans on the other hand were chomping at the bit and could hardly contain their glee at the prospect of running against a self-styled socialist and licking their lips at the prospect of painting Sanders as a left wing radical who is woefully out of step with American values. The die appeared to have all but been cast and Democrats were understandably nervous.

But a funny thing – an incredibly funny thing – happened along the way! Black voters, notably black female voters who have been the most loyal bloc of Democratic voters for decades, saw that Barack Obama’s former vice president was in trouble and came out in droves!

With a powerful endorsement from black South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, black voters came out like their lives depended on it and handed Biden such a decisive victory that he never looked back and the rest is history.

Folks, black female voters might have saved American democracy, and possibly the course of history, forever. What would have happened to the world if Sanders had won? I can answer. Four more years of Trump and four more years of insanity, narcissism, and a blatant disregard for democratic norms and institutions. It would have also been four more years of insults, incompetence and, let’s not forget, the continuous threat of “fire and fury”.
