Harbour View jumped from seventh to second in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) points standing with a 2-0 victory over Mount Pleasant Football Academy at Stadium East on Saturday (July 10).
Goals by Oquassa Chong in the 20th minute and Lennox Russell in the 58th won the match for Harbour View and carried them to five points, one adrift of leaders Portmore United.
Waterhouse, Cavalier, Tivoli Gardens, Vere United and Mount Pleasant are all on four points with goal difference separating them. Portmore, Harbour View and Mount Pleasant have all played three matches while the other teams have played two.
Chong slid in front of goalkeeper David Swaby to convert a right-sided cross from Tyrese Williams and scored his third goal of the season, after netting in Habour View’s 1-1 draws against Cavalier and Waterhouse.
He then provided a cross from the right to the far post, which Russell, inside the 18-yard box, controlled beautifully, before powering a shot past Swaby for Habour View’s second goal.
Chong had to be taken to hospital after being involved in a play.
According to Harbour View coach, Ludlow Bernard, what transpired in the match was worked out during their regular training sessions, as he played many of his younger charges.
“Inside of the training sessions, we try and replicate these kinds of circumstances. Sometimes we overload one team and put the pressure on. We are not afraid to expose the youngsters out there and it is either they sink or swim and there is enough motivation for them out there coming from some of the elders. So it’s just a matter of getting settled early,” Bernard said.
Losing coach Paul Davis of Mount Pleasant believes that they never recovered from a sluggish start.
“We started lousy against Habour View who moved the ball fast, give them so much space to play the football and worse we went down 1-0, it is hard to get back into that momentum, so I think we were to be blamed. The team was a little bit lacklustre today,” Davis said.
