The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has announced a hearing slated for Wednesday, January 31, that will feature testimonies on online child safety from the top executives of five major tech companies: Meta, X, TikTok, Snap, and Discord.
Notably, the CEOs of X, Discord, and Snap will testify under subpoena, following a string of refusals during weeks of negotiation.
This resistance compelled the committee to take unprecedented action, including dispatching the U.S. Marshals Service to deliver subpoenas directly to Discord’s office.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin and U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, chair and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in a joint statement said: “When we held our first hearing on protecting children online with experts and advocates earlier this year, Big Tech griped about not getting an invitation. We promised them that their time would come. But when they were offered their chance to testify, some companies outright refused to make their CEOs available.”
“Several companies initially refused to accept a subpoena. The U.S. Marshals Service even attempted to serve the subpoena at Discord’s office. Both actions are remarkable departures from typical practice. We’ve known from the beginning that our efforts to protect children online would be met with hesitation from Big Tech. They finally are being forced to acknowledge their failures when it comes to protecting kids. Now that all five companies are cooperating, we look forward to hearing from their CEOs. Parents and kids demand action,” they continued.
The CEOs set to appear include: Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Linda Yaccarino of X, Shou Zi Chew of TikTok, Evan Spiegel of Snap, and Jason Citron of Discord. While Zuckerberg and Shou Zi Chew have volunteered to testify, the committee has compelled the remaining three to appear through subpoena power.
