The Black Angel Foundation continues its mission of supporting emerging musicians and performers as they pursue their musical education and talent development.
To this end, the Foundation, which was established to honour the life of Joseph Michael “Black Angel” Buchanan, has awarded over J$6.75 million in music scholarships to 30 aspiring musicians since launching its scholarship programme in 2020.
Beneficiaries include students and tertiary-level scholars at the Alpha School of Music, the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and several corporate area schools.

These scholarships provide critical financial assistance, enabling deserving students to continue their studies, refine their craft and contribute to Jamaica’s globally recognised musical legacy. The 2026 Edna Manley College Scholarship Recipients are:
- J$445,415 – Janae Pearson, 2nd Year (Music Education)
- J$314,000 – Olaniesha Nichol, 4th Year Performance
- J$260,000 – Andyonie Alexander, 3rd Year Performance
Three additional scholarship recipients from the Alpha School of Music will be selected in May at the end of the academic term. Buchanan was a gifted musician, producer and songwriter, who passed before he could realise his dreams.

Determined to ensure that his passion would continue to make an impact, his family established the Black Angel Foundation in 2019 to transform loss into opportunity for others.
