Olympic hopeful Yohan Blake was among five Jamaicans, who won their respective events at the California leg of the American Track League on Sunday (July 18).

On a day when wind was a factor in performance, Blake, who plans to contest the 100m and 200m at the Olympics when track and field begins in Tokyo early next month, won the 200m in a wind-legal 20.22 seconds, just outside the 20.18 he ran while finishing second at Jamaica’s national championships in late June.

Rasheed Dwyer, who defeated Blake at the trials, was also given the same time in a blanket finish with the 2012 Olympics 200m silver medalist.

Meanwhile, Jevaughn Minzie, who is also headed to Tokyo, was third in 20.29.

The promising young American Candice Hill completed her sprint double when she won the women’s 200m in a windy 22.30 (3.3m/s).  Jamaican veteran and Commonwealth Games 400m medalist Anastasia Le-Roy, came home in 22.79 for second place. Cassondra Hall of the USA ran 22.97 for the final podium spot.

Hill had earlier won the 100m in 10.99 (2.5m/s) ahead of Tristan Evelyn of Barbados clocked 11.23 and Jamaica’s Remona Burchell, who ran 11.24.

Minzie took the top spot in the 100m where four men were separated by 0.02s at the finish line. Minzie and American Chris Royster were awarded 10.09 with the wind just over the 2.0 limit, at 2.3m/s. Travis Collins, another American was third in 10.10.

Jamaican champion Tyquendo Tracey finished fourth in 10.11. Of note, was the performance of Jazeel Murphy, who ran 10.15. He ran a wind-legal lifetime best of 10.17 in the preliminary round of the competition.

Had it not been for a strong tailwind of 3.6m/s Jamaican sprint hurdles champion Megan Tapper, would have had a new lifetime best. Notwithstanding, her victory in 12.48 was still impressive as she dominated the race from the first hurdle and won by a comfortable margin.

Evonne Britton ran 12.72 for second place and Yanique Thompson, who will be competing in Tokyo, finished third in 12.75.

Tovea Jenkins ran out an easy winner in the 400m in 51.53 beating Jaide Stepter of the USA who ran 51.87 for second.

Le-Roy finished third in 51.98.

Khallifah Rosser won the men’s event in 45.74 ahead of Nathon Allen, who clocked 45.89. South Africa’s Derrick Mokaleng was third in 46.04.

Ronda Whyte was also a easy winner of the 400m hurdles clocking 55.57.

Puerto Rico’s Grace Claxton was well back and crossed the line in 56.26 while Canada’s Noelle Montcalm ran 56.37 for third place.
