The Ministry of Health and Wellness has taken the decision to halt its islandwide COVID-19 vaccination blitz exercises until further notice but has disclosed that it will resume Phase I inoculations starting next Monday, April 26, 2021.
Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton made the announcement while making his sectoral presentation in Parliament on Wednesday (April 21), explaining that the decision was due to the current state of vaccine supplies.
Despite this, the minister said vaccinations would continue by appointment only for persons who fall within Phase I of the vaccination plan – that is, persons 60 years and older, members of the security forces, Jamaica Fire Brigade, Passport Immigration, and Citizenship Agency, and Jamaica Customs employees.
In defining the current inoculation priority group, which notably did not include teachers and tourism workers, Tufton acknowledged the anxiety among these individuals to continue their vaccination programme and stated that they would be able to receive their first doses once subsequent vaccine supplies had arrived.
Persons within the Phase I group who would like to be vaccinated are being encouraged to use the ministry’s web portal at www.moh.gov.jm or call 888-ONE-LOVE (888- 663-5683) to make appointments.
