On the heels of the resignation of former Reggae Girlz ambassador Cedella Marley, the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation has announced the discontinuation of financial support for the Jamaica Football Federation’s (JFF) National Women’s programme.

The decision was conveyed in a formal letter addressed to JFF President Michael Ricketts on Friday, January 5. The letter, signed by Lecia-Caye Taylor, general counsel for the Bob and Rita Marley Foundations, cited “careful consideration and deliberation as the basis for the decision”.

As circumstances change and our foundations evolve, we must reassess our priorities and the impact of our funding on various causes and organisations. In light of our revised focus and funding priorities, we have come to the conclusion that we can no longer continue our financial support of the JFF programme.

The letter highlighted the foundation’s pride in the accomplishments of the women’s football team and the growth of women’s football in Jamaica throughout the foundation’s collaboration with the JFF.

Marley previously said she was disappointed with the “noncommital” tone of JFF executives in recent months amid its ongoing impasse with the Reggae Girlz team, and concluded that the federation is no longer receptive to any attempts at reconciliation.
