Decades after its release, Bob Marley’s greatest hits compilation album ‘Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers‘ is enjoying a re-chart on Billboard and a spike in sales, thanks to the ‘One Love’ biopic dominating the silver screen in North America.

The album is still performing incredibly well in the United States and is on the rise because of the film, which was released globally on Valentine’s Day.

While ‘Legend’ has never had issues moving units, sales have risen astronomically since the film’s debut.

This week, the compilation album lifts on five Billboard charts, a rank it hasn’t reached on most lists in years. On the Billboard 200, ‘Legend ‘jumps from No. 29 to No. 17 and is back inside the top 20 on the ranking of the most-consumed albums in the country for the first time in a long while.

Tracking album sales

Information shared by Luminate, the company that powers the Billboard charts, shows the album sold another 29,436 equivalent units in the past tracking frame, up more than 35 per cent from the week prior. As such, ‘Legend’ is also a powerful seller once again.

On the Top Album Sales chart, which focuses only on pure purchases, as opposed to equivalent units like the Billboard 200 (which includes streaming activity), the compilation narrowly misses out on re-entering the top 10. It is up to No. 11 from No. 14. In the past tracking week, the title sold another 6,766 copies.

This represents an increase of over 25 per cent from the period before. The compilation managed to reach a new peak on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. ‘Legend‘ improves from No. 11 to No. 8, hitting a high it’s never seen before.

The title has spent time inside the top 10 on the ranking of the most-consumed hip-hop, R&B, and rap full-lengths but until now, it had only reached as high as No. 10.  This is a new best showing on another, non-genre-specific tally.

Album rankings on different platforms

Legend‘ is up to No. 23 on the Top Streaming Albums chart, which tracks the most successful projects in America on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, among others. On that tally, it steps up to No. 23 from No. 44–the largest leap on any ranking.

Marley and the Wailer’s beloved collection climbs to No. 3 on the Top R&B Albums, up from fifth place. It’s also a non-mover in first place on the Top Reggae Albums chart, though that’s nothing new for the effort, which is almost always in control of that roster.

However, despite all the attention that the singer’s movie, ‘Bob Marley: One Love‘, is attracting, the ‘Legend‘ compilation has plummted on the Vinyl Albums chart. In this space, the album is down to No. 9.

It has previously ruled this ranking, as Legend remains one of the bestselling vinyl titles in the US.
