Authorities have moved to temporarily close the Bog Walk Gorge in St Catherine, as a train derailed in the area on Saturday afternoon (August 9).

Preliminary reports indicate that the train carrying bauxite mineral deposits was travelling northwest parallel to the major thoroughfare when several cars derailed.

Aftermath footage from the scene shows entire carriage sections on the banks of the Rio Cobre.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), in a terse statement, advised that vehicular traffic has been reduced to a single lane, urging motorists to take alternative routes where possible.

WATCH:

In the meantime, the National Water Commission says several of its supply and distribution facilities in the Bog Walk and Ewarton areas are out of operation due to electricity outages resulting from the train derailment, which has damaged Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo) power lines.

This has impacted water supply to customers in St Catherine and Kingston, with some experiencing low water pressure, intermittent supply,  or disruptions resulting in no water.  Customers are encouraged to conserve their water storage at this time.

As the NWC carries out its assessments, water facilities reported so far to be out of operation include Tulloch Spring, Bybrook #1, #2, #3, and #4, Knollis, Sligoville #1, #2, #3, and #4, Simons, Berwick, Sunnyside.

The NWC apologised for any inconvenience caused and appreciated the patience and understanding of Jamaicans as regular operations will resume once power supply is restored to the facilities.
