Track and field legend Usain Bolt has a simple piece of advice for American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson; say less, train more.
Bolt, who celebrated his 35th birthday last month, retired from the sport in 2017 having won eight Olympic and 11 World Championship gold medals. He also owns the world records in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relays.
During an interview with the New York Post this week while out promoting his newly released album Country Yutes, Bolt while responding to questions about Richardson, offered sage advice for the emerging American sprinter.

“I would tell Sha’Carri to train harder and to be focused and not say too much. If you talk that big talk you have to back it up. So just train hard and focus on that and try to come back do it and then talk about it,” Bolt offered while explaining that the more she talks and disses the Jamaican stars like Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson and Shericka Jackson, the more she riles the Jamaicans up, giving them additional motivation to beat her.
“Jamaicans don’t like when people talk s–t about us because we are a very proud people. So if you talk about us we are gonna want you to back it up. It definitely gave those women the extra push,” he said.
He explained the situation between Richardson and the Jamaican women who swept the medals in the 100m at the Tokyo Olympics was similar to how he was riled up by Justin Gatlin prior to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Bolt won the 100m and 200m and 4x100m relay in Brazil and became the first man in history to win three consecutive Olympic titles in the 100m and 200m.
He said he knew Thompson-Herah would have won the 100m when she raced against Richardson in Oregon on August 21, the day he turned 35.
However, he revealed that he didn’t expect Richardson to finish last.
