Boscobel’s man of the match receives $100,000 prize courtesy of Wray Rum

The Boscobel cricket team emerged triumphant at the Social Development Commission (SDC)-Wray & Nephew National Community T20 Cricket competition as they secured the winning title on Sunday (August 21) at the Port Rhoades Sports Club in Discovery Bay, St Ann.

The spectacular showdown between the Boscobel Cricket Team of St Mary and The White Horses of St Thomas was nothing short of exciting.

After being scaled back in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cricket lovers were more than happy to see the finale of the long-awaited competition that came to life once again.

Among the excited spectators was Pavel Smith, marketing manager at J. Wray & Nephew Ltd, who was happy the event saw almost a massive turnout of patrons.

“It’s always a pleasure to witness the pride of a community as healthy competition and excellent sportsmanship gets under way,” said Smith.

“The game was well played, and the excitement was palpable all around. Sporting in Jamaica is truly a Fi Wi Culture experience. Wray & Nephew is proud to have been a part of this amazing display of Jamaican talent.”

The T20 final match between the two first-time finalists kicked off at 2:30 pm and came to a close finish as Team Boscobel earned 140 runs to 139 runs from White Horses.

Alwyn Williams, wearing the number 10 from Team Boscobel, made a whopping 100 runs to help secure his team’s victory. At the end of the match, Williams walked away with two $10,000 cash prizes as the man of the match and as the man scoring the most runs. He also received a spot prize of $100,000 from Wray & Nephew for his stunning performance.

The Boscobel team walked away with the winning trophy and a massive $1.5-million prize.

Orlando Lyons, captain of the Boscobel team, was elated after the win.

“Once we, as a Boscobel unit, come out and apply ourselves, we can achieve anything. We can back our talent. I want to say kudos to Alwyn Williams for carrying us. He didn’t carry us across the line, but he set it up for us to win this title,” said Lyons.

“I also want to thank Wray and Nephew. Because of them, we can see youngsters partaking in cricket and also see people who have retired from cricket coming back and trying to make the best of it.”

After the match came to an end, spectators were treated to superb live performances.

Yung Muta soothed the crowd with conscious lyrics from his debut song, Thank you Jah, while dancehall newcomer King J received good energy from the audience as he performed his latest hits.

La Lee stirred the crowd into a frenzy during an animated display of dance moves, before the fireman, Capleton, closed the show in his usual, high-energy fashion.
