The ISSA GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships known as “Champs” is the biggest high school event of its kind in the region and probably the world. It is a premier high school track and field event that showcases the island’s talented young athletes. The championships have a rich history, dating back to 1910 for the boys and 1957 for the girls.

The event is a five-day extravaganza, featuring hundreds of athletes from various high schools across Jamaica, competing in multiple age classes. For the boys, there are three age classes: Under 14 (Class 3), Under 16 (Class 2), and Under 20 (Class 1). The girls compete in four age classes: Under 13 (Class 4), Under 15 (Class 3), Under 17 (Class 2), and Under 19 (Class 1).

The championships have been a launching pad for many world-class athletes, including Olympic champions like Usain Bolt, Veronica Campbell-Brown, and Shelly-Ann Fraser. Other notable athletes who have competed at Champs include Asafa Powell, Elaine Thompson, and Melaine Walker. The event has grown in popularity, attracting college coaches and scouts worldwide. Many top performers at Champs have gone on to secure scholarships and compete at the collegiate and international levels.

Currently, there are over 100 overseas athletes from several Caribbean countries, and as far as Kenya, Uganda and Ghana competing at Champs.
