Detectives assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigations Division (FNID) have charged two British nationals with breaches under the Dangerous Drugs Act after the pair allegedly attempted to smuggle over 30 pounds of cocaine at the Norman Manley International Airport last Wednesday (March 12).

Police say it is the first cocaine seizure at the NMIA since the start of 2025. The illicit drug has an
estimated street value of £454,400 (J$92.7 million).

The two have since been identified as 51-year-old Derrick Winston and 41-year-old Lisa Wood, both of Orrington addresses in England.

Reports are that at about 4:25 pm, lawmen were conducting security checks of passengers when both Winston’s and Wood’s actions aroused their suspicion. A search of Winston’s luggage revealed seven kilograms (15.5 pounds) of cocaine while a search of Wood’s luggage revealed 7.2 kilograms (16 pounds) of cocaine.

The pair was taken into custody and charged with possession of cocaine, dealing with cocaine, attempting to export cocaine, and conspiracy

“We remain vigilant at our ports and these arrests underscore our commitment and the effectiveness of our police men and women in combating drug trafficking,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Samuel Blake, head of FNID.

Their court dates are being finalised.
