One of Jamaica’s most distinguished and respected business leaders Hugh Hart has died.
Hart had a stellar career in both the public and private sector.
He was born on December 26, 1929, in St. Andrew and attended Munro College in 1940. He earned a law degree from Queen’s College, Oxford University and went on to do his Master’s. Hart was admitted to the Bar in 1953 and began his legal career as a solicitor in 1956.

The revered attorney was a man for all seasons, a high performer in both the public and private sectors, playing a vital role in shaping Jamaica’s business sector. His talent was sought out by political leaders, and his statecraft was undeniable.
The Munro College old boy served as Minister of Mining & Energy between 1983 and 1987 and Minister of Tourism between 1984 and 1989. He was a Senator between 1980 and 1993. He was a major voice in nation-building in the three decades after Independence..
In the public sector, he served as Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica as well as Chairman of the Jamaica Bauxite Institute.. Hart was part of a generation of bright, capable men who helped to shape Jamaica’s bauxite and alumina industry.
On the corporate sector side, he made a mark as Chairman of Carreras, and Chairman of Jamaica Flour Mills.
Come a new century, a new decade, Hart, by then a doyen in both the legal field and in the corporate world, joined forces with Peter Bunting, Christopher Williams, Mark Golding and Garfield Sinclair as Chairman of the regional financial services company, Proven Group.

In 2016, Hugh Hart lent his considerable talents to Whim Development Company Limited, a vehicle for residential real state that began with building 875 houses in Old Harbour.
His was a long and notable career that spanned close to seventy years, with him excelling at every assignment presented to him. In 2023 he stepped down as Chairman of Proven Group having served in that capacity since its inception.
