Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte is urging the general public to carefully review the recommendations submitted in the Constitutional Reform Committee (CRC) report to participate in informed discussions.

The CRC report was made available to members of the public on Tuesday (May 21), following the tabling of the ministry paper in Parliament.

“Already, the discussions are raging. I must, however, ask everyone to read carefully, read, and re-read because already I have seen some inaccurate reporting, and I believe it is because of the eagerness to make comments on what is in the report without going through the sections fully. My first message to everyone listening, whether here or at home or overseas, is that you read the report of the CRC on the transition of the republic of Jamaica and other matters carefully,” the minister said at today’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.

She further urged individuals to seek clarity on the proposed recommendation where it is needed.

“If you need clarity, please seek clarity. We know that there will be other views; we know that you will be reasoning through the recommendations; you will want to have your say, so be assured that we are listening very carefully,” the constitutional affairs minister said.

Malahoo Forte says the report, which forms the first phase of Jamaica’s transition to republic status, will allow a more focused conversation on matters for reform in the constitution.
