The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has added its voice to the growing chorus of nations denouncing the recent hostilities in Israel and the Palestinian territory of Gaza.

In a statement released on Monday, CARICOM expressed deep concern and abhorrence at the ongoing violence, which has claimed the lives of innocent civilians and further exacerbated the age-old grievances between the two parties.

“The attacks in Israel and the counterattacks in Gaza have shocked the international community with their relentless and savage nature. CARICOM firmly believes that such actions run counter to the principles of civilised life and living, and the toll on innocent lives is a heart-wrenching consequence of the fervour and violence of the combatants,” the Caribbean group stated.

In a unified stance with responsible members of the global community, CARICOM has called for an immediate ceasefire and a cessation of hostilities from all parties involved. The 15-country bloc of nations says it recognises that the recent round of hostilities is rooted in the historical pain and suffering stemming from age-old quarrels.

It also acknowledges the harsh conditions under which the Palestinian people have been living, often likened to a form of colonialism, as well as Israel’s ongoing sense of insecurity. It says these complex factors continue to fuel a cycle of violence that threatens to persist until they are decisively addressed.

“CARICOM remains steadfast in its support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 and the ongoing efforts of the United Nations to facilitate a two-state solution as the most viable path towards comprehensive peace, security, and tranquillity in the region. The organisation firmly believes that a just and lasting resolution can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy, and mutual respect,” it said in closing.
