

CARICOM’S Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett joins the region in mourning the loss of the people that died in a fire at the Mahdia Secondary School in Guyana on Sunday (May 21).
In a statement on Monday, the Secretary-General said that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has received with great sorrow the shocking news of the fire at the high school in the Guyanese town of Mahdia, where a number of children died.
“We mourn with the families, friends and communities who are impacted by this horrifying event,” she said.

Dr Carla Barnett also expressed condolences to the Government and people of Guyana and shared that: “We pray for a speedy recovery for those injured and otherwise impacted and offer the support of CARICOM Member States as the community returns to normalcy.”
The fire at the school’s girls’ dormitory is believed to have started around midnight.
