Twenty-two-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz defeated Italian Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win the US Open in New York on Sunday (September 7) and pocket a US$5 million cheque.

Alcaraz and Sinner have now split all four Grand Slams this year, with Novak Djokovic making it to all the respective semi-finals.

Today, Alcaraz was just too good and went after Sinner from the opening point. Sinner was always on the back foot and Alcatraz’s quickness around the court rattled him.

With President Donald Trump watching from the stands, Carlos Alcaraz put on an impressive show. Some of the baseline shot-making was extraordinary.

The drop shot worked very well for Alcaraz today. He hit 40 winners, served 10 aces and had just 24 unforced errors.

It must be said that both Alcaraz and Sinner have replaced Federer, Nadal and Djokovic as the top guns of men’s tennis. They may very well be the ones to beat over the better part of the next decade.

Fritz, Zverev, Shelton, Draper, deMinaur seem not even close to these two at this moment in time.

After securing the victory, Alcaraz said: “ I want to start with Jannik, it’s unbelievable what you’re doing the whole season, great level during every tournament that you’re playing…I’m seeing you more than my family.

“It’s great to share a court, to share the locker room, to share everything with you.

“I’m just really proud about the people I have around me. Every achievement  I’m having is because of you, thanks to you…this one is yours.”

After this US Open win, Carlos Alcaraz is the number-one-ranked tennis player in the world.

He now has a tally of six Grand Slam title wins.
