Jamaica’s Cavalier SC has put themselves into a wonderful position to be crowned CONCACAF Caribbean Club champions after defeating Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic 1-0 in the first leg at the National Stadium on Tuesday night.
Shaquille Stein scored the winning goal in the 20th minute latching onto a Dwayne Atkinson pass for his competition-leading eighth goal.
The return and deciding leg will be next Tuesday at Cibao FC Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.
Away goals rule serves as the first tiebreaker in case of a draw on aggregate and Cavalier’s technical director Rudolph Speid, said Cavalier achieved part of the objective not to concede a goal at home.
“There’s a number of objectives that we had. One of them was to not concede because of the away goal rule, so we achieved that. The other one was to try and get a lead,” Speid pointed out.
“We didn’t get a big enough lead as we would have wanted, but I’ll take what happened today anytime over another score,” he noted.
Despite having a one-goal advantage Speid said Cavalier will not go to the Dominican Republic to defend.
“We believe that on the day, we’ll be able to give a good account of ourselves. We’re not going there to try and draw the game. We’re going there to try and win the game. So, we’re not worried,” said a confident Speid. “We’ve always been a team that can defend well. If you notice, since the semifinal, we have not conceded even one goal for the three games. If we do that again, we should be good. Just one more.”
