At some point in our lives, we have all benefitted from the kind gestures or donations from others that ultimately made our lives better.

In recognition of these acts, the Hungarian Parliament and Government established September 5 as ‘International Day of Charity’, paying homage to Mother Teresa, a woman who dedicated 45 years of her life to assisting those in need.

Born on August 26, 1910, Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu committed her life to religion at the young age of 12.

As her love for religious missions to spread the gospel grew, she found herself in India, one of the poorest countries in the world.

There she helped some of the poorest people, opening several hospices, establishing a congregation, and instituting leper houses and orphanages.

In 2012, the holiday spread worldwide with the the United Nations extending it to recognise the charitable works of all organisations, and to highlight the power of charity in alleviating humanitarian crises and human suffering.

Mother Teresa passed away in 1997, leaving some of her most famous quotes that inspire others to give back.

“Not all of us can do great things. But, we can do small things with great love.”

As we continue along our day, here are some ways that we can celebrate and give back to others with great love.

Donate funds to a charity

There are several charitable organisations worldwide and in Jamaica where donations can be made. These include the Maxfield Park Children’s Home, Dream Jamaica and the United Way of Jamaica.

By donating, the charity of your choice can make great strides towards their goals, and you can feel good knowing you helped to get them there.

Volunteer

Money is not the only thing that charitable organisations need to function. Sometimes, being present and volunteering can do more good than donating.

Given that today is International Charity Day, there are many charity events that are taking place. These events can either be virtual or in person.

So, find whatever stokes your passion and then find some time in your schedule to volunteer at organisations that align with these passions.

Help a homeless person in need

When we are traversing the roads of Jamaica, often we see homeless persons who are in need or food or water and we ignore them.

Though they may not be as fortunate as we are, they are still people in need of love, kindness and respect.

So, if you see a homeless person on the street and in need of assistance, food or money, take the time to give them whatever you can.
