Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) general secretary Dr Horace Chang says the party is committed to fair and just treatment of all members of the labour force in Jamaica and has absolutely no intention to target any member of the civil service.

Chang, in a social media statement on Tuesday (July 22), mused that ‘it is in the DNA’ of the governing JLP to pursue measures which uplift Jamaicans, including members of the civil service, while creating an environment which is conducive to their growth, development and self-actualisation.

The JLP general secretary outlined that he welcomes clarification from Constitutional Affairs Minister Marlene Malahoo Forte of her remarks made on Sunday (July 20).

A July 21 publication in the Jamaica Gleaner indicated that the JLP government plans to clamp down on politically driven civil servants. Malahoo Forte, in a statement, expressed that this information does not accurately reflect the substance of her comments.

“To be clear, any suggestion that the government is seeking to ‘clamp down on’ or discriminate against civil servants is a gross misrepresentation of my remarks,” she said.

Chang says Malahoo Forte’s affirmation in her statement, which was issued on Monday that the government of the Jamaica Labour Party will not pursue a policy of victimising any civil servant accurately reflects the position of the party which was founded in 1943 with a strong commitment to protecting the dignity and rights of members of the labour force in Jamaica, including the poor and dispossessed.
