Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jr., is assuring all Jamaicans that the Government is committed to upholding religious freedom and will never impose policies that force individuals to act against their faith.

He was responding to concerns raised by members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church regarding Saturday operations at Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ).

In a statement issued by the minister on March 13, he said: “The Government of Jamaica remains fully committed to upholding religious liberty and ensuring that all Jamaicans can practise their faith without infringement.”

He pointed out that the decision to expand the TAJ offices’ operating hours, including additional Saturday openings, is driven by the need to provide greater convenience and access to critical services for the public.

“The expansion does not violate the religious freedom of any individual. TAJ has a clear policy that respects the beliefs of its staff. Employees are not mandated to work on Saturdays if doing so would contradict their religious convictions,” the minister said.

Staff members are given the opportunity to indicate their availability, ensuring that no one is forced to compromise their faith.

The initiative to offer Saturday services is not a new development. The Portmore Tax Office has operated every Saturday for some time, and selected TAJ offices have opened on the last Saturday of each month.

According to Minister Charles, the expansion aims to extend the benefits of this initiative to additional locations, ensuring all citizens have the opportunity to access important services outside of traditional weekday hours.
