With a roaring hard count, the Secondary School Gridiron League (SSGL) is kicking off the 2025 season of its flag football competition this month, featuring boys’ and girls’ teams from 11 teams across Jamaica.
The development programme, according to organisers, is designed to nurture the island’s top young athletes, paving the way for future Olympic glory.
Now in its sixth year, the SSGL has experienced remarkable growth, with a significant surge in interest from schools and organisations nationwide. The league’s impact extends far beyond the gridiron, contributing to a notable decline in crime statistics within participating communities. By providing a positive outlet for young athletes, the SSGL has become a beacon of hope for Jamaican youth.
The 2025 Spring SSGL Flag Football competition promises to be an electrifying event, with top boys’ and girls’ teams competing for the coveted KOC Flag Football Championship Trophy at Brooks Park in Mandeville. The National Tackle Football Association (NTFA) will host the SSGL Flag Football league on February 8, featuring the best of Jamaican youth football.
“The SSGL is committed to empowering Jamaican youth through sports, and our Flag Football competition is an exciting opportunity for our young athletes to shine,” said Jerome Harriott, SSGL director. “We’re proud to provide a platform for boys and girls to develop their skills, build their confidence, and pursue their dreams of Olympic glory.”
With the guidance and support of the Ministry of Sport, Sports Development Foundation (SDF), Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), and partners, the SSGL is poised for continued growth and success.
The recent surge in name, image and likeness (NIL) deals – projected to reach US$2 billion in 2025 – presents unprecedented financial opportunities for athletes and the league.
