The Office of the Children’s Advocate is deeply saddened and outraged by the reported rape and brutal killing of 10-year-old Shani Coke in Tyre District, Trelawny.

 We extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones and the wider community as they grapple with this unimaginable loss.

Children’s Advocate, Diahann Gordon Harrison underscored that, “this tragedy is yet another painful reminder of the grave danger posed by sexual predators and of our collective responsibility to protect children from abuse, exploitation and violence”.

The OCA also unequivocally condemns the reported mob killing which followed Shani’s death. “While the anger and anguish surrounding this tragedy are understandable, “jungle justice” cannot be supported. Those responsible for crimes against children must be brought to justice through investigation and the lawful processes of the courts,” said Mrs Gordon Harrison.

Mrs Gordon Harrison reiterated that a child cannot consent to sexual activity with an adult. “Any such contact is a violation of the child’s rights and, depending on the circumstances, a criminal offence”, she said.

Shani deserved to be safe. She deserved the opportunity to grow, learn and fulfil her potential. This tragedy must strengthen our national resolve to identify threats to children, report suspected abuse and intervene before another child’s life is taken.
