Kawa is a very good reggae band. Its lead guitarist is fantastic, the percussions are tight, and the charismatic lead singer Lao Wei is on top of his game.

Kawa is from Yunnan Province, in the southwest part of the People’s Republic of China. The region is a lot like Jamaica and is mountainous with two main rivers.

Kawa was formed in 2015, and in the decade since, the band has honed its craft, blending reggae with ethnic Chinese music.

The band put on a great show last night at the Chinese Benevolent Association HQ on Old Hope Road. These fellas can really play, and their rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘Jamming‘ was well-received.

Original tunes, ‘Toast Song‘ and ‘The Right Path‘ were equally memorable.

Kawa toured the UK in 2024 and was a hit, earning good reviews. The band is making a name for itself; check them out!
