The 2025 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiads, hosted by the UWI Mona campus through its Department of Mathematics, received a significant boost with a J$500,000 sponsorship from CIBC Caribbean.

The competition, which fosters excellence in mathematics among students across Jamaica, culminated in the seniors’ finals on March 15, where 149 students demonstrated their mathematical prowess.

This year, approximately 2,500 students from 108 Prep and Primary schools participated in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad, while the Senior Mathematical Olympiad saw 540 students from 30 high schools competing at the national level.

Forty-eight students from 13 high schools and 109 from 41 prep and primary schools will be recognised at the official awards ceremony on April 10, 2025, at UWI’s Assembly Hall.

The top-performing students from these Olympiads will also have the opportunity to represent Jamaica at the Mathematical Olympiad of Central America and the Caribbean (MOCC), showcasing their skills on the international stage.

During the official sponsorship presentation, Lancelot Leslie, director of business and infrastructure support at CIBC Caribbean, expressed the bank’s commitment to fostering academic excellence.

“At CIBC Caribbean, we believe in empowering young minds and investing in the future. Mathematics is the foundation of critical thinking and problem-solving, and we are honoured to support these outstanding students as they compete at the highest level,” he said.
